MACKELLAR ANNOUNCES THE ULANGOO NUNEE BINBEE JOINT VENTURE
Ulangoo Nunee Binbee (UNB) Industries, founded by the Kemp family is partnering with MacKellar Group, an established mining services provider with over six decades of experience. Together, UNB Industries and MacKellar Group are joining forces to improve the land’s condition while creating pathways for Indigenous Australian.
UNB Industries is committed to the restoration and rejuvenation of lands in central Queensland. Through a Joint Venture with MacKellar Group they aim to achieve this goal while also empowering communities in the area.
Tyrone Kemp, co-founder of UNB Industries emphasises the importance of restoration post mining activities.
"Our collaboration with MacKellar Group through Ulangoo Nunee Binbee Industries focuses on rehabilitating mining sites to restore the land’s original state. As Ghungalu people our primary objective is to revive our country and its lands."
Reviving Landscapes for Native Biodiversity
The partnership between UNB Industries and MacKellar Group revolves around providing services for land restoration and rehabilitation in the mining sector.
These services provided include:
- Reintroducing native plant species through replanting and reforestation
- Setting up nurseries to grow medicinal and edible plants
- Using remediation techniques to improve soil quality and prevent erosion
Shaye Kemp emphasises the importance of rehabilitating mined land to restore it for future generations.
"Mining rehabilitation is important to nourish the mined land back to what it was. Otherwise, our children and their children aren't going to have their traditional medicines back on country," says Shaye Kemp. "If we continue to extract resources from the land without restoration efforts, it falls short of what is truly needed."
Working Together to Benefit the Community
By combining traditional wisdom with modern land rehabilitation practices, the UNB and MacKellar JV aims to transform previously mined areas into vibrant and healthy environments.
Central to this partnership is the commitment to engage and empower the local Ghungalu community.
Key initiatives involve providing employment opportunities, supporting Indigenous owned businesses and establishing a nursery for growing plants used in traditional foods and medicines.
"Tyson, Tyrone and I share a deep passion for land restoration. With our knowledge of mining practices and the Ghungalu country, we aspire to maintain a reputable company that not only benefits the environment, but also creates career opportunities for young members of the indigenous community," says Shaye.
The UNB MacKellar Joint Venture recognises this work as essential in achieving long-term sustainable restoration of the land, bringing positive outcomes for both nature and the people living in central Queensland.
"MacKellar can show us the ropes on the management side and we bring our hands-on experience," Tyrone explains.
"This partnership will benefit our community by offering training opportunities and ensuring sustainable employment for years to come. The lasting impact will lead to a sustainable country."
Together UNB Industries and MacKellar Group are working to improving the land while creating pathways and employment for Indigenous Australians.
